Change starts on the inside. For many years I have been
teaching what I refer to as "Money Psychology." For more in-depth
treatment of this topic, please refer to my best-selling book, "Money Is
My Friend."

Money Psychology is the study of how a person's thinking
affects financial results. Financial success is not taught in Government
schools and it is very unlikely that you learned the principles of
financial success from 20,000 meals with people who did not have the right
information about money. The common training that most people received
about money was to accept the pay offered for work they only tolerate.
Therefore, you are likely to discover that stepping up to earn the income
you want from work you love is an act of defiance--defiance of both parental
conditioning and societal conditioning. Such a transition to work you love
is greatly aided by the increased passion that you will experience from
the opportunity you are giving yourself to express what is your true
purpose, instead of conforming to someone else's purpose, rules, guidelines or standards.
An important aspect of developing financial freedom is breaking free of
recurring patterns. No matter how long they may be in place; you can
change them with this three-step method I am describing. Significant
change begins on the inside. Change is much easier if you know how to do
it. The simple three-step method I have devised over the years to aid
people in making the changes they want consists of Awareness, Acceptance
and Action. These steps work together in that each one makes the others
easier. Leaving out any of them makes change much more difficult.
Awareness Structure of your
Mind A simple description of the structure of
the mind is to say it is divided into the conscious and the unconscious.
The conscious contains the thoughts we are aware of and the unconscious,
those we are not. The unconscious seems to be divided into two parts.
One part is in fact accessible, but is in a state of temporary
inaccessibility because of denial, arrogance or unresolved past trauma.
A possible reason that the temporarily inaccessible portion remains so
is the fear of being upset by its insane contents. The bad news is that
you may be a lot crazier than you thought. The good news is that this is
OK. This means that increased awareness is quite likely to put you in
touch with parts of yourself that you don't like very much--only temporarily. Awareness
eliminates denial. For this reason, it gives essential knowledge about the suppressed parts of your
consciousness that are unintentionally sabotaging your consciously intended results.
Then there is the permanently inaccessible portion of the unconscious
mind. This is the part that controls autonomic functions such and
digestion and perspiration.
It is just about impossible to change what you don't know about. For
example many clients at the outset were unaware that the results produced
by their moneymaking activities were limited by their fear of earning an
income greater than their parents. For example, in some cases, patterns
of income and net worth looked like a roller coaster. There were usually
valid so-called "reasons" for each decline. These so-called "valid"
reasons blocked awareness of the underlying fear of exceeding their parents income.
There is not a great deal of awareness required to see how your
financial life is affected by your thinking. Just as you can find your way
around the darkest room with just one little candle, a little bit of
willingness to give up the denial serves as a wide open doorway to the
unconscious psychological dynamics that act to limit your success.
Your awareness about the effect of your personal history does not
have to be perfect. Even your most vague speculation about your own
psychological dynamics is far better than saying, "I don't know." In
seminars I have often asked participants about certain aspects of their
finances that they wish to change. If a person answers "I don't know," in
response to some aspect of something they want to change, I say, "There is
no one else to ask about this."
On-going financial difficulties
manifest as the unintentional secondary gains of childhood conditioning.
This means that your adult financial success may be limited by
conclusions that were made long ago in your childhood, during a time when
you had to conform your family's standards about conduct and thinking. For
example, unconscious adherence to childhood rules such as sit down, be
quiet, accept what we are given and don't take money from strangers can
confound your attempts to progress.
Additionally, internal psychological patterns such as fear of
disapproval, compulsive rebellion, disappointment from past financial
setbacks, unconscious desire for dependency, arguments about money and
inheritances, compulsive people pleasing, fear of loss, fear of
corruption, religious guilt, fear of rejection and unwarranted
perfectionism can be holding you back. In general societal conditioning
teaches us to accept the income offered from work we tolerate.
Awareness of your own personal money psychology is the important
first step toward financial freedom. Develop a curiosity about the
internal causes of the recurring patterns in your life and you may be
surprised what you learn. Getting right with money is almost certain to
take you outside your self-imposed comfort zone.
